The Department of Homeland Security is conducting raids on Chinese mobile and fintech companies all around the country.

DELHI, NEW DELHI: The Income Tax Department is conducting searches on big Chinese mobile businesses around the country as part of a massive crackdown on the industry.

Sources told ANI on Wednesday that mobile companies such as Oppo, Xiaomi, and One Plus are being investigated.

The hunt, which began on Tuesday, has engulfed more than two dozen locations. "Raids are currently taking place in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Greater Noida, Kolkata, Guwahati, Indore, and other cities," sources informed ANI.

According to ANI, this search also includes certain fintech companies. The hunt includes the Chief Executive Officers of these companies, who are currently being probed by Income Tax sleuths.

According to insiders, the search was based on intelligence reports of massive tax fraud by major Chinese mobile companies. They had been operating under the radar for a long time, and when the IRS received actual evidence of tax fraud, raids were carried out on these businesses.

According to insiders, it is too early to provide information about the ongoing investigation because the sleuths are still on the case, but a significant amount of digital material proving tax evasion has been discovered and seized.

ZTE, a Chinese government-controlled telecom company, was searched earlier this month. ZTE's corporate headquarters, the residence of the foreign director, the residence of the company secretary, the account person, and the cash handler were all searched.

During the investigation into ZTE, the inspection of import bills vs selling bills revealed a gross profit of around 30% on the equipment trade, despite the company's "massive" losses over the years.

The losses are being booked by the corporation through false expenses in relation to services delivered, according to the investigation. A few of these recipients have been identified, each of whom has had significant expenses accrued over time. According to reports, these entities were discovered to be non-existent at their addresses.
