Elephants in battle

A war elephant was a military elephant that had been trained and guided by humans. The main purpose of the war elephant was to assault the enemy, break their ranks, and terrorise and terrify them. Elephantry refers to military formations that use elephants to transport troops. [1] In antiquity, war elephants played a crucial role in a number of significant wars, particularly in Ancient India. While they were only used on a limited and irregular basis in ancient China, they were a permanent staple in the armies of historical Southeast Asian kingdoms. They were also used in ancient Persia and the Mediterranean globe by Macedonian troops, Hellenistic Greek nations, the Roman Republic and later Empire, and Carthage in North Africa during classical antiquity. Throughout the Middle Ages, they had a strong presence on the battlefield in several areas. The Cabinet approves an election reform law that allows for voluntary Aadhaar-Voter ID connection.

The Election Commission proposed revisions that included tying the ID card to the Aadhaar number, which it said would prevent multiple enrollments of the same person in different areas.

According to news agency PTI, the Union Cabinet approved a bill on election reforms on Wednesday. According to the article, the amendments will enable the Election Commission to seed the Aadhaar number with electoral rolls on a voluntary basis.

The election legislation will be rendered "gender-neutral" for service voters, according to the measure approved by the Cabinet. Another feature of the bill is that new voters would be able to register on four separate dates each year. Those who turn 18 on or before January 1 of each year are now only permitted to register as voters.

According to the current laws, an army man's wife is eligible to register as a service voter, while a woman army officer's husband is not. The ECI has requested that the term "wife" be replaced with "spouse" in a clause of the Representation of the People Act relating to service voters.

The Election Commission suggested revisions in August 2019 that included tying the ID card to the Aadhaar number, which will prevent multiple enrollments of the same person in different areas. The Election Commission has been working on this proposition for a long time. The EC's National Electoral Law Purification and Authentication Program, which aimed to link the Aadhaar number to the Voter ID number, was halted in 2015 after the Supreme Court ruled that using Aadhaar for welfare schemes would be optional.

According to sources, when Ravi Shankar Prasad was the minister, the law ministry began working on the plan in 2020. Minister Kiren Rijiju told Parliament in August that the government was evaluating the EC's recommendations. "The Commission submitted its 244th and 255th Reports encompassing various aspects of electoral reforms, including disqualification from contesting election on the basis of charge framing, regulation of election finance and opinion polls, ban on paid news, and so on," the minister said in a written response.

Another provision in the changes, according to PTI, will allow the Election Commission to take over any premise for the conduct of elections, despite concerns to using schools as polling stations.
