Derek O'Brien, a member of the Trinamool Rajya Sabha, has been suspended from Parliament.
During protests over a bill for electoral reforms and the suspension of 12 MPs, Derek O'Brien was accused of throwing the rulebook at the Chair.
Derek O'Brien, a member of the Trinamool Rajya Sabha, has
been suspended from parliament for the remainder of the Winter Session after
reportedly throwing the rulebook and walking out. As the Rajya Sabha will
adjourn tomorrow, he will be absent of the house for one day.
During protests against a bill for electoral reforms and the
suspension of 12 MPs, the Trinamool member was accused of hurling the rulebook
at the Chair.
Mr. O'Brien slammed the administration over his suspension
in a series of tweets.
"When the government was BULLDOZING farm regulations, I
was suspended from RS the last time. After then, we all know what transpired.
Today, while denouncing the BJP's mockery of parliament and BULLDOZING the
Election Laws Bill 2021, he was suspended. I'm hoping that this bill will be
repealed as well "Mr. O'Brien sent out a tweet.
"The BJP has the audacity to lecture on the Norm Book
after breaching every rule and precedent. Irony has recently passed away.
(There were only two people at the burial.) "he penned
Mr. O'Brien was seen in the video quoting the rulebook to
claim that the election reform law, Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2021, was
introduced without sufficient notice. Despite intense opposition protests, the
law was enacted in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
"Has been available for at least two days prior to the
date of the motion?"
If a law gets passed at 3 p.m. in the Lok Sabha. What
happened to the time that was promised?
Today, this bill is not able to be listed. But everything is
possible... you can even fake a majority," remarked the Trinamool Congress
leader.
"How can I find the time as a member of this house to
introduce a resolution referring this bill to a select committee?" There
is no longer anything! You need to carry a bill with you. This is a bill that
has no chance of passing..."
The bill had been allowed at shorter notice under the rules,
according to Harivansh Narayan Singh, the Chair at the time.
Mr. O'Brien tweeted a mobile phone video after storming out
of the house, stating that the government was bulldozing legislation.
"The Rajya Sabha TV channel has been censored. All
opposition MPs are gathered in the Rajya Sabha well, opposing to the bill that
links Aadhaar to voter identification. It is being bulldozed by the government.
Parliament is being made a joke of, much like the agriculture bills. This is
even worse than an emergency situation. Television is being blocked, and
parliament is being assassinated "According to the Trinamool Congress
politician, he was obliged to come out and videotape himself on the phone.
